I am always on the lookout for my favorites and finding a Zenith plier stapler with original packaging is quite a treat. My previous Zenith Stapler of the Week offerings have been the 551, 548/E & 548/E7 and now I present the 548. There isn't too much variation between the 548s. This version has one feature my other examples do not, the ability to both staple and pin by means of a sliding anvil. The Zenith company website shows this feature is also available in other versions. The 548 seems to be a slightly higher quality model with nickle-plated brass parts also available in gold-plate. The box also reveals that the different staple sizes were noted by the color of the box they were packaged in, the 548 staples, for example, came in a blue box. This explains the inscription of blue box in four languages on both the 548 and 548/E.

According to Zenith's history, the numbers of the models seem to correspond with the year they were introduced, the 548 in 1948, the 551 (I assume) in 1951 and later the 590 in 1990 and 595 in 1995. I've always wondered at the seemingly arbitrary nature of model numbers. This bit of information gives me hope that someday, the mystery of Swingline's later stapler models will be revealed.

I have always enjoyed Swingline staplers for their sturdy metal construction much akin to the Tonka trucks of my youth. At some point it must have become more profitable to forge the stapler of plastic rather than steel. It was the same with Tonka trucks but the cost savings are lost in quality and longevity. For example, here are two very nice Swingline 790 magazine staplers composed of at least 80% plastic. Unfortunately, that plastic construction is liable to fail as is apparent on the white 790.

On the positive side, the 790 is innovative in both form and function; undoubtably, Swingline must have won some design award with it. First off as a magazine stapler, the staples are coiled in a removable 5000 staple cartridge which is also used on several of Swingline's electric staplers. Instead of a wire spool, the cartridge is a coil of flat glued staples from which the stapler separates the staple and forms legs to be crimped in the anvil. On the mechanical scale of complexity, it's one step between a normal strip and a wire spool stapler. On the Stapler of the Week scale it ranks just between nifty and very cool.

These two staplers really represent variations on a theme I have visited many times before. I had previously mentioned the enameled ornamentation of the Hotchkiss No 54 but the Elastic Juwel goes one step further. The Juwel is engraved with scenes of flowers and wildlife and in-painted to accentuate the engraving. The Star Paper Fastener bears the faded remains of the enamel ornamented Hotchkiss No 54 and like the Juwel is yet another example of multiple companies producing identically designed staplers. But as the Antique Stapler Collector's Website notes the Star Paper Fastener Company became the E.H. Hotchkiss Company and continued to market staplers with the Star brand. Also, frequently stapler patents were purchased from companies by their competitors and then sold under the new owner's name. It's no wonder I keep talking about the same staplers every month or so.

For your stapling pleasure, I present to you another simple yet elegant example from the Novus company. The B 7 mirrors the design of the B 22 including the push button spring action loading. The color scheme is a bit warmer than the blue and grey of the B 22 and coincidentally, it matches the corrosion of the steel. Sometimes these happy accidents happen.

Markwell produced staplers with lettered staple size classifications and the "SX" Pacemaker marks another staple size not yet featured here. It has some great ergonomic features from back when ergonomics were just called good design. The base is completely rubber so there's no worry about this stapler sliding anywhere. There is a wedge-shaped plunger that makes stapling a pleasure. I don't know if Markwell still honors its free service claim cited on the box but this stapler promises to keep the pace for years to come.

For some time I have been collecting versions of the Hotchkiss No 52, No 54 and No 57 and always had a sneaking suspicion there was something missing. Certain Hotchkiss staple packaging notes the mythical No 53 and here it is, the heavy duty plier stapler. It has the style of the Hotchkiss plier but unlike the others, the No 53 will not fit in your pocket easily. It may fit in your briefcase and it should because lets face it, this stapler means business.

This stapler is one example of why I love my job. On occasion, staplers get broken and they come to the workroom to be mended by the "Fiddler." Usually it's only a staple jam or a slight adjustment, but sometimes greater measures are required as evident in the repairs needed by this patient. Apparently, plastic was not the best design choice for the handle of a heavy duty stapler. Maybe someone tried to staple one too many sheets of paper but in any case, this stapler was very close to making a trip to the dumpster. With the addition of two mending plates, some machine screws, a bit of paint and some thumb tacks, this ACCO 131 was reborn as Frankenstapler. There's no telling what's next in Frankenstapler's future, it's already mended the sandal of one research assistant.

My father in-law finds some very interesting things in his travels. Although the clip niceler is not a stapler, it holds your paper together with metal nalclips which are similar to binder clips minus the arms for removal. The nalclip is known by many aliases such as the Gachuck, Clam Clip, Paper Clamp, Supaclip, Super Clip, Magic Clipper or the Paper Shark. As many names as there are for the nalclip, each uses the basic principle of a c-shaped steel clip that produces a pinch-point to hold the paper. In operating the clip niceler, the nalclip slides over a pair of wedges on each side and opens allowing the paper to enter in and finally pinches as the nalclip exits the clip niceler.

The nalclip is pretty amazing in the fact that it causes little damage to the paper and is entirely reusable. It does leave something to be desired in the operational experience. The act of repeatedly applying nalclips feels a bit unnatural and would surely lead to carpal tunnel problems. But I suppose it all comes down to personal preference. I myself would choose the plunger-style buzzers of the Price is Right over the thumb-button trigger of the Jeopardy anyday.

Two years ago I bought a small pink and chrome Swingline 77B stapler and had a feeling it was missing something. I had seen other 77 models with molded plastic bases which seemed to complete the picture. Yet, the bottom of this 77 seemed too finished to be encased in plastic. Finally I happened upon a complete red and chrome 77B and later acquired this ivory and chrome example. One might ask who needs a stapler separate from its base. The most obvious answer is so that the base can be fastened to an out of the way surface and house the stapler when not in use. As the stapler slides into the base it locks in place so this mounting surface could be on a wall or even a ceiling and the stapler would hold fast. I mean this stapler could even be used in space. Now there are other wall-mountable staplers out there, but the 77B is by far my favorite yet.

Here are two more models from the Apsco line. Each has the same sleek design as the Apsco 2002 featured September 14, 2008. The 3003 is a smaller version of the 2002, retaining the austere Scandinavian design of the "deluxe executive" model yet scaled to fit the proportionately smaller surface area of the non-"deluxe executive" desk. This in contrast to the recently featured Swingline No. 3 which is really only a shorter version of the No. 4. The 4004 is the "dual-purpose" model, for use as a plier, tacker or desktop stapler. Two more examples that fall under the "great things come from Sweden" category.

I have previously featured the Swingline No. 4 and the No. 3P, yet only mentioned the No. 3. Here are two examples of the more compact workhorse that was no less wide-spread. It's no rarity, but as with the No. 4, the design is among Swingline's best. At the museum where I work, there are many examples of the gray No. 4 still in use which certainly can attest to the quality of its manufacture and design. The No. 3C, above, an earlier example, has the black finish, early plastic plunger and a wood base. Its finish is similar to another No. 4, also previously mentioned here. When I first saw a No. 3C, I did not expect to base to be as finished as it is. I include an image of it to show its simple yet elegant inscription and rivet attachment. It reminds me of how Michelangelo said he freed the figures from the blocks of stone he carved. Perhaps inside this block of wood, a streamlined Sphynx-paw base lurks...waiting for its freedom.

When it rains, it pours. In the last month I have learned about three new Neva Clog staplers. The appearance of the P-50 connects a model number with the US2033599 patent drawing. At first, I was a bit puzzled by its appearance, the spring button that pushes up through the anvil plate. Fortunately, the patent drawing explains its purpose. The anvil of the P-50 is designed solely to pin and the button prevents the staple from bending up in the middle, producing a easily removable staple. The design seems almost limiting but I am sure with knowledge of its intended application, it makes perfect sense. In any case, I am only too pleased to share another chapter of the Neva Clog story.

Every now and then something comes along and renews my passion for staplers. Best described as a "Franken-stapler", the M-100 is a S-100 with a modified jaw. I have every reason to believe it was Neva Clog factory modification as evidenced in the photo below from a recent online auction. The box is labeled "Special Neva Clog Stapling Plier Model MB-100," indicating the MB-100 is most likely a modified B-100. It gives me great hope to know there are more Neva Clog "Special" staplers out there. From browsing Neva Clog patents, I know there were many more stapler designs than staplers I've seen and that means many more Neva Clog to find. Cherchez l'agrafeuse!

The Arrow Commander is by no means a remarkable stapler. Like the Markwell RX-45 and Neva Clog staplers featured March 2, 2008, the Commander components are punched and formed from sheets of steel. When I was in elementary school, my father was a punch-press operator for Tonka Toys in Mound, Minnesota. The simplicity of design and construction found in the Commander reminds me of those early Tonka trucks I played with in my youth. It's really quite interesting to wonder at all the products made of pop-rivets and sheet metal. One need only to add some real rubber wheels and my friend Gary in Duluth might add it to his annual Tonka window display.

The Bostitch P4 is another fine stapler design by J.F. Cavanagh. Perhaps you remember the Bostitch P1 stapler featured May, 24, 2008. The P4 has the look of a staple gun tacker but Cavanagh included an anvil plate with a very deep throat. The combination of increased staple-driving leverage and the extended reach of the anvil plate suggests it was designed for commercial or industrial use. In my opinion, at the time the P4 and the P1 were two of the more innovative stapler designs offered by Bostitch. They took the power of a tacker and applied it for stapling good, not evil.

The Markwell RTP is remarkable for its ornate engraved decoration announcing everything you need to know about it. This engraving lets you know which and how many staples you'll use, how far you have to insert the paper to put your staple up to 4 inches from the edge, where you need to press to operate the stapler and perhaps most importantly "RTP" is the nickname you'll use for your Markwell stapler. I can't say what "RTP" is short for aside from the fact Markwell used similar model names such as the RX, RF, RB, along with many variations on these model initials by adding extra numbers or letters. In addition to these intitals, some models were also given additional nicknames, such as the Staple-Master, the Pacemaker, the Handi-Clip and the Staple-Robot to name a few. In any case, the RTP is a very memorable stapler.

The 85 CT is another amazing El Casco stapler. It may not be the gold plated version, but this chrome plier, like the M1-CA, is quite a statement. My first thought was how closely it resembles the Neva Clog Junior. The 85 CT's construction is a bit more substantial, but it is produced for a luxury market, whereas the Junior was manufactured with utility in mind. The box provides a useful lesson for stapler enthusiasts, because as the art of stapling maybe a universal language, it helps to know the corresponding word for what it is you're speaking.

Somewhere in between Swingline's 99 plier and Cub plier, the Bates Hand-Grip 88P is simple and to the point. It is interesting to contrast these two examples to see how little the more modern plastic and steel example has changed from its all steel predecessor. The interesting feature of all three mentioned staplers is the pierced tab at the back. I've already offered the theory that it's purpose was meant to prevent "office drift," but I ponder whose office it was used in. It's actually small enough to be carried in a pocket and would be classified as a light duty stapler. It may be foolish to wonder at who or what vocation this design was aimed, but it's what I think about in my spare moments. I'm always asking the question, "What would you fasten with this stapler?"

These examples of the Hotchkiss No. 57 join the No. 52 and No. 54 in the series but at first glance they reveal only superficial differences between models. The No. 57 uses a slightly narrower gauge 1/8" staple, where as the No. 52 and No. 54 share 3/16" or 1/8" staples. The instructions included in the No. 52 and No. 57 boxes references the method to clear jammed staples "by placing a pencil between the jaws of the plier and compressing the handles" at which point "the patented spring front plate comes into play allowing the crumpled staples to be ejected." The No. 54 is not mentioned in these instructions and this led me to notice a small button located just behind the jaw which when depressed takes the place of the pencil in ejecting a jammed staple. This button is also found on the Elastic Juwel, which leads me to believe it's taken from the German design. All in all another fascinating chapter in the Hotchkiss story.

Along with previously featured Swingline Cub staplers, these Cub Pliers not only fall into the "cute" category, but are also perfectly sized for comfort and function. When held in one's palm, the user's thumb and index finger naturally fall into position in the indents on the top and bottom of the stapler. The Cub Plier features a punched tab at the rear to enable attaching a chain or string to prevent "office product drift" which tends to occur in the workplace. As with all Cub examples, Cub or no 77 staples are required, for which I am still searching for a equivalent source as Swingline has discontinued production and sold off all surplus stock. I have not seen enough examples to speak to the color variety, although a recent eBay auction featured an orange Cub Plier, which in my experience is an uncommon color. Crate and Barrel's trendy subsidiary, CB2, is peddling a modern orange Swingline. Although, I can't say it'll be on my wish-list.

There seems to be a pattern in my stapler collecting. A lot of my favorite staplers designs come from German designers or manufacturers and Novus has been making staplers there since 1949. Along with Novus, Leitz and the previously featured Elastic are some other German stapler manufacturers of note. The Novus B22 is a straight-forward design, staples load in front by operating catch in rear, conversion to tacking means merely opening up the stapler and switching from staple to pin requires only to move the anvil in the desired direction. Nothing too fancy here, but the muted greys are soothing and very pleasing to the eye.

Here is a comparison of two different versions of the Hotchkiss 122 series manufactured in two different eras. I first consulted my wife/resident objects expert regarding the 122A and the first words out of her mouth were, "war-time relic." Rationing applied to all the essentials of life such as food, clothing and yes even stapling. I've seen Swingline staplers from the same era made from similar materials including bakelite and even wood. The 122-P by contrast has very little in variety of material. It's design is the same with the exception of it's plier stapler foot, but the construction is a bit more refined. A comparison of the box designs is also of some interest. The 122A box is simply printed cardboard box whereas the 122-P has a two part box with a printed paper label attached. Another example of this style of box can be found with the Hotchkiss No. 52, Stapler of the Week, January 19, 2008. All in all two very interesting staplers and as the nickname "Bantam" suggests, they're small yet powerful.

Stapler of the Week Archive- Arrow 210

The Arrow 210 was introduced to me last fall by a fellow stapler enthusiast but I hadn't come across an example until recently. The 210 was most likely designed and manufactured in good old Brooklyn, NY and has a few really interesting features that sets it apart from other desktop models. The most interesting has to be the anvil plate which is triangular in shape and offers not just two but three staple settings: staple, pin and temporary staple. Staples load from the rear, the top opens with the release seen on the side and to top it all off, instead of simply hinging open for tacking, the entire top comes off. Another notable feature of this 210 is the area on top of the stapler holds a plastic plaque which could be engraved with your company name. On the whole it is quite a nice desktop stapler.

This little 'BABE" has, as you can see, a lot of history. I'd been on the look out for an example since seeing examples featured by the Early Office Museum and by the Stapler Exchange. The 'Babe' was manufactured in Germany and distributed in the U.S.A. by Parrot Speed Fastener Corp, which later became Swingline. The 'Babe' features a sliding paper stop allowing the user get every staple the same distance from the edge of the paper. Another notable design aspect is the way the stapler shifts from stapling to pinning. Instead of the anvil plate moving, the entire top of the stapler moves at the hinge pin between two positions. The whole process seems just a bit difficult to me, but who am I to question the stapler that started an empire.

The Zenith stapler has long been a favorite of mine. Zenith is actually a brand of Balma-Capoduri & C. which also manufactures the popular Italian glue and adhesive brands, Coccoina and Lakol. My love for European office supply design continues and it's actually a shame my enthusiasm developed after my studies abroad in Italy. I had previously compared the Zenith to the Matac 7, another Italian stapler but had not acquired a Zenith until recently. Fortunately I found two different models, the 551 and the 548/E7. There are a few differences between the two, the 551 uses 24/6 & 24/8 staples and the 548/E7 uses 6/6 & 6/8 staples. The 551 is a bit longer than the 548E which perhaps provides the leverage needed to staple 5+ sheets or even thin cards and cardboard.

Zenith keeps updating their plier staplers for the modern age and its markets. The US distribution ranges from design-conscious sellers such as Design Within Reach, boutiques such as LA's Plastica, internet mega-marts such as Amazon, and of course the collector's fix dealer eBay. All I know, is if I'm ever near Voghera, Italy, you can be sure I'll be bringing home an assortment of Zenith staplers.

Update May 25, 2009: I came across this 548/E and had to include it to represent a "vintage" version. Along with all it's corrosion and patina, this 548/E has a few interesting inscriptions. Like the 551 above it states it is "Importe d'Italie" but on the top it features the phrase blue box in Italian, French, English, and Spanish.

The APSCO 2002 is yet another interesting example of the international lines of stapler manufacture. APSCO, or the Automatic Pencil Sharpener Company, was known, as its name suggests, for its line of pencil sharpeners*. Staplers appeared to be a sideline. The brochure detail below mentions the 2002 's manufacture from "Swedish steel" and leads me to believe it was actually manufactured by Isaberg-Rapid. The Rapid Classic 2 is identical in design as I'm sure there are many others (including the Rexel No 560 Beaver, featured February 7, 2008). The 2002 also bears the inscription TORONTO, ONT, CAN. I haven't found any APSCO-Canada connection yet.

* It's main sharpener competitor was the Boston Specialty Corporation. There were many manufacturers as shown in the Early Office Museum's mechanical pencil sharpener gallery, but APSCO and Boston seemed to come out on top. APSCO was first absorbed into the Berol Corporation in 1969 and Berol was in turn absorbed by the Sanford Corporation in 1995.

The Elastic Juwel is yet another fine stapler of German origin. It's also a fine example of the blurred lines of stapler design. The Isaberg Rapid Juwel first caught my attention. I don't have a modern example but when I found this Juwel, I was excited to acquire my an early version. When I received it in the mail, I was puzzled because it so closely resembles the Hotchkiss No. 54, right down to the numeral 54 imprinted on its nose. I examined the No. 54 more closely and found it bears the imprint, "U.S.A. PAT MADE IN GERMANY." It was at this point I realized, "German, not Swedish." The Goethe-Institut lists the Elastic Juwel as a "Monument of German Design," and that the "Swedish staple company Isaberg Rapid liked it so much that it bought Mainz Elastic GmbH in February and shifted production to Sweden." The U.S.A. patent lists Fridolin Polzer, an Austrian-American, as the designer of the No. 54. I don't know if Polzer's No 54 preceded the Elastic Juwel but the Goethe-Institut got it right, these pliers really are Monuments of Stapler Design.

The Swingline 3P has always interested me. When I finally acquired one, I was surprised at its size, only about 4 by 3 inches. When one considers the necessity of it fitting in the palm of one's hand, the 3P's size isn't at all surprising. It's basic design is taken from the Swingline 3 with the plunger action being driven by a lever which contacts the palm. It can be opened for tacking with the lever at the back of the throat. The 3P uses the same staples as the No. 3. I'm going to hazard a guess that the "P" stands for plier but the difference in size makes me hesitate to say the 3P the plier version of the No.3. I'm sure I'll find the answer but couldn't wait to feature this great stapler.

It is with great pleasure that I share with you my Neva Clog D-30. I can't tell you how long I've wanted this stapler and the sold price listed at DecoWorld.com led me to believe it was somewhat out of my reach. Fortunately, I found a much less expensive, yet less pristine example.

Patents for this stapler (2087242 and 2041523) list the inventor as Earl C. Bunnell (born c.1895, died 1958). Bunnell was an industrial designer and held a variety of patents for items such as a safety razor, an eyelash applicator, a smoking pipe and one for a machine which manufactures Q-Tips. He also holds one patent for the J-30 (2088404). One will note a variation in the plunger knob between this example and the D-30 presented by the Office Museum.

The Bostitch P-1 fits neatly in the palm of my hand with my pinkie finger inserted in the finger grip. It took me a while to understand how to load the stapler. It turns out to be a front loading stapler as the rest of the stapler and its mechanism is concealed within the casing. The handles of the plier stapler have also been contained, making the P-1 remarkably compact tool.

Designed by John F. Cavanagh in 1933, the P-1 was described as a "pocket fastener-applying implement." Cavanagh had such an eye for compactness that the designs allowed the finger grip to be folded up into the casing when not in use. This example does not have that capability yet it loses no favor in my eyes.

This was a Neva Clog model I didn't know existed. I was excited when I came across it grouped in an auction lot with a Sargent & Co wire cutter and a W Schollhorn Co eyelet setter. Of course, I was doubly excited when these items introduced me to an additional world of tools. But, don't worry, my stapler budget does not allow me to branch out into the cut-throat world of tool collectors.

The Junior only adds to the mysterious German origin of some Neva Clog staplers. It's design is similar to the German B-100 featured in the Stapler of the Week on February 7, 2008. The Junior jaw opening places it in the same category as the S-100 series. I'm uncertain for what intended use such a model was designed. The shorter handles decrease it's stapling leverage and, as a result, sheet or stapled-material capacity. Once again, the Neva Clog saga continues.

This particular example was found at the Bethesda Thrift Shop by my Mother. The stapler and the nearly full box of staples came to a grand total of $2. This was the price range I sought out when I first began collecting staplers. I originally gave myself a $15 price cap which would now make my stapler purchases few and far between. At any price, this plier stapler is a pristine example.

The box of staples provides a few items of interest. It lists the Markwell Manufacturing Company's address as 424 W 33rd Street, New York, N.Y.. A quick internet search shows Markwell's New York headquarters are now a "Premiere Boutique Office Building." There's no surprise the company's former Manhattan home has become prime real estate. The box also bears a price tag from the now defunct C.O.M.B. store. The acronym C.O.M.B. abbreviated Close-Out Merchandise Buyers. For some reason Minnesota has a rich history of direct-mail and television marketers such as Fingerhut and the CVN now absorbed by QVC.

The mechanism inside these Bates staplers create staples from spools of wire, hence their classification as Wire Spool Stapling Machines. The Robert E. De Barth company in Lansdale, PA, refills wire spool cartridges, repairs old staplers and offers a wealth of information. According to De Barth, the Bates wire spool staplers were in production from the 1920's until the late 1960's. Originally the wire was made from steel but was switched to brass, which do not rust. The De Barth company has even created a Hot Rod version of the Bates.

Since moving to New York, I've been really interested by the concentration of stapler manufacturers on the east coast. It was this interest that led me to acquire the Heller Tacker. The Tacker is the first example of a tacker/staple-gun type stapler I've featured in the Stapler of the Week and I feel it warrants attention, seeing as it bears the name of the town I now call home, Brooklyn, N.Y.. My first realization that the five boroughs of New York held a wealth of stapler history came my first week of work. Each day on our way into Manhattan, we pass by an assortment of warehouses. At the intersection of Van Dam and Skillman Ave, one warehouse had the shadow of the words Swingline staplers left on the brick wall by a sign now ten years missing. It was that moment the initials, L.I.C., suddenly changed from what I had always assumed to be a business abbreviations like LTD to a bricks and mortar building in Long Island City.

Harold S. Heller's connection to Brooklyn is still a mystery to me, although I haven't done that much digging. All of Heller's patents I've found were filed in Cleveland, OH. I suspect there's a possibly a warehouse somewhere in Brooklyn that bears the shadow of the Heller name, I only have to find it. When I do find it, you'll be sure to hear about it.

I had mentioned the Tatum Aluminum Stapler in an earlier post and provided a link to The Antique Stapler Collector's Website's (A.S.C.W.) excellent information on it, including patent drawings assigning credit for its design to Herbert W. Marano of Brooklyn, NY in 1954. It turns out, Herbert Marano was also responsible for the T-155 "Little Buddy." As indicated in my post and that of the A.S.C.W., the Tatum Aluminum Stapler is highly sought after by collectors of design objects as well as stapler enthusiasts. I acquired this Tatum after missing out on several other examples which sold for prices far beyond my stapler budget. Needless to say, it has a prominent placement in my stapler hall of fame.

The Rapid Supreme 51 is a great little plier stapler. Like the Neva Clog J-series staplers, when loaded with stainless steel or Monel staples, it was used to splice film during processing. The Salco Staple Headquarters listing calls the Supreme 51 "the Splicer" and notes its virtues of a tight and flat clinched staple which "will not catch in squeegees, mar rollers, or wear shoulder of film spools" and also the plier itself is "highly resistant to chemicals and bleaches used in film processing. The stapler is guaranteed not to contaminate solutions or discolor film." But as film processing goes the way of mimeograph, the Supreme 51 is destined to live on as a light duty stapler.

I happened upon the remains of a Rapid Classic 1 plier stapler on my walk home from work. The Rapid Classic 1 is identical to the Faber-Castell FC-1. Both were manufactured by what is now known as Isaberg-Rapid in Hestra, Sweden. At first glance, I was really excited to find a stapler but then excitement turned to sadness. I kept walking at first, but then turned back to pick it up and put it in my pocket. As I passed the scrap metal warehouse, I thought to leave it there but didn't. This sad stapler made its way home with me. I'm not certain what will become of it.

After looking at a few hundred staplers, one begins to recognize stapler types of which each company manufactured a version. These two models are cut from thinner steel when compared to the similarly designed El Casco M-1CA. When compared to the luxury of El Casco, these staplers were most likely the economy models. Each stapler uses a narrow gauge staple, the RX-45 using RX staples and the Neva Clog using the standard DJ-340, suggesting they were meant for light-duty stapling needs.

I have not seen many examples of the featured Neva Clog stapler. It is yet another taste of the company's products manufactured in Germany. Like the German B-100, this model features a removable front plate to facilitate removing jammed staples and we all know how frustrating a staple jam can be.

Upon leaving my last job, I half-jokingly hinted that my "gold watch" gift should be a gold-plated El Casco stapler. I realized the $200+ price tag was well beyond the non-profit budget I'd grown to know so well. It was only fitting that my stapler desires should go unfulfilled as my explorations into the world of staplers began when I was denied a new stapler as I started my employment there. A new stapler wasn't in the budget then either. My wife soothed my disappointment by giving me five vintage staplers, one for each day of the week, thus seeding the Stapler of the Week collection.

El Casco started out making fine revolvers in the 1920's in Spain. Their website states that the depression following the market crash of 1929 caused the company to diversify its products, "adding well-crafted stationary articles to their arsenal." Each product comes with a life-time guarantee which accounts for the high price-tag. I haven't found another example of the M-1 in yellow and I'm unable to determine what it might have originally cost. I'm guessing it was in the $80 range, so this may be the most valuable stapler in the collection...and perhaps the most cute.

When my wife and I first moved to New York, I came across this stapler while enjoying the hospitality of friends. I sheepishly asked if they would allow me to feature it in the Stapler of the Week and the next time I saw them, they donated it to the collection. Since then, I have been trying to find more information on this, the first English stapler featured.

Like Swingline, Rexel is the English stapler brand that falls under the ACCO corporate umbrella. I imagine that Rexel too was a company unto itself before becoming a subsidiary. Rexel staplers have numbers to identify them such as the No 560 above, but they also had nicknames like Beaver, Gazelle and Bambi. The newer Rexel model names seem to draw from astronomic or mythological sources. Perhaps these names help the English bond with their staplers as they possibly did in the states (Tatum T-155 "Little Buddy".) It's certainly enabled me to get to know the No 560 and perhaps in time I'll know it well enough to refer to it by it's nickname.

Another great Hotchkiss plier stapler, the No. 52 varies slightly from the No. 54 previously featured in the Stapler of the Week. The No. 52 seems to allow one to clear jammed staples by means of the "patented spring front plate", where as the No. 54 does not appear to have this feature. The box (pictured below) boasts "This Hotchkiss Model No. 52 may be carried in pocket or briefcase" and advises one to "Ask about Hotchkiss Model No. 53 for Heavy Duty Industrial Work" as the No. 52 is recommended for light duty work. Along with the stapler, the box also contains a operating instructions and a guarantee bond in both English and Spanish translation. The instructions are said to apply to the No. 51, 52, 53 and 57 pliers and do not mention the No. 54. I can only imagine what it was like to see a shelf stocked with boxes of these staplers and the virtues of each individual model.

This Neva Clog has been on my wish-list since I found out it existed. Although, I could say that about every new stapler I learn about. The DT-30 design is very interesting in contrast to the other Neva Clog models. Its combination of aluminum & steel suggest a design toward a light yet strong stapler. If the 'Gator' were made of the same gauge steel as the other Neva Clog plier staplers, it might prove to be a bit heavy to use. I think about G. Halvarsen, using this stapler, and wonder what he might have been fastening. An internet search turned up a 1955 instructional document from the Philco Corporation that specifically called for the DT-30 in the assembly of their Apple receiver. I don't know if G. Halvarsen worked on early color television technology, but thanks to him, I have a great example of this stapling pliers.

Neva Clog produced a line of desk top staplers in addition to their plier staplers. The D-30, D-40 and D-40X are the Neva Clog staplers recognized as being perhaps the most art deco in design. I'm not the best person to make that distinction, but they are very attractive. Their sleek lines and solid construction make them very pleasant to use. I don't use them much however because my supply of DJ-340 staples is low.

These staplers are remarkable for their styling and details, but beyond that, they are the most common types of staplers available. One need only look to the Ace Pilot for another example of these common desk top models. They function very much the same, yet they have very different aesthetic value. The D-40 is the standard model, similar to the Pilot, the D-30 is the compact model, and the D-40X is the extended reach model for stapling booklets & pamphlets.

The D-30 is featured on the Magazine Stapling Machines page of the Early Office Museum and one example was featured for sale by DecoWorld. DecoWorld was the first hit I found for replacement DJ-340 staples. I've since found other sources with varying prices, but haven't made a big order yet.

Neva Clog produced many models of plier staplers to perform different tasks. As the J-30, J-60, and J-56R were more suited to the office, the S-100, F-100, and B-100 models were meant for tougher tasks. I've found reference to them used by leather workers and even corn breeders (Maize Newsletter Issue 15, 1941). As seen illustrated below, the S, F and B-100s varied in jaw opening size. The S-100 and F-100 used either A-1000 (1/4" leg) or L-1000 (5/16" leg), where as the B-100 had it's own B-staples. If you find yourself confused by all the stapler and staple model numbers, you're not alone. There's really no discernible logic to these names but it's interesting to hypothesize what different things one would staple with each model. I measured and my index finger would fit in a 1/2" jaw opening which brings back a rather unhappy childhood memory. You can fill in the details. Luckily, these S-100s only have 9/32" of clearance so I won't have to relive that experience.

The matac 7 comes to the Stapler of the Week collection from Italy by way of Australia. I bought two, one in white and one in blue. I've had difficulty finding references to either the matac 7, catam (I do realize that's matac spelled backwards) or any recognizable markings on the stapler. It is, however, a near dead ringer for the Zenith 548 made by Balma, Capoduri & C.. Sure, there are some design differences in the casing and the obvious rear vs. front loading staples. I'm guessing the matac 7 was a design knock off marketed decades after the distinctive Zenith design was fairly well established.

Guessing aside, what interests me more are the differences is design sensibilities across cultures. It's not an original exploration by any means, but European staplers have a very different feel and look when compared to those in the USA. Their appearances are very clinical, almost like medical devices. I've found myself more drawn to these foreign manufacturers of office tools... the typewriters (3) I brought along on our move to NY are all Olivettis.

Building on last week's staplers in Japan connection, here's a neat little compact fastener from MUJI. When not in use, a slight adjustment enables it to become even more compact as seen in the top illustration above. The MUJI "basic principle is to develop new simple products at reasonable prices by making the best use of materials while considering environmental issues." Now that's a pretty good principle, saving the environment and such with good design.

My wife was familiar with MUJI long before I was keen on office supplies. She first bought MUJI products in the basement of Selfridges & Co in London and then later shopped at one of the many the MUJI stores. I only mention this because a store is set to open in New York City this fall. I may acquire some more MUJI myself.

This particular example was a gift to the Stapler of the Week from one Aki Shibata, a MUJI disciple from Japan to Minnesota. Just a reminder...donate a stapler to the collection and you may get a mention.

This specific stapler's design can be traced to one Fridolin Polzer through patent drawings provided by Old Staplers.com. It's also the unadorned version of a plier stapler in the modernism collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. I've been looking for one ever since I saw the MIA's example. It's movement is refined and concealed within its case. The staples are smaller than those of the Swingline "Tot" 50. Truly, it was meant to be ornamented and used by delicate hands.

In researching this stapler, I learned some interesting details about the Hotchkiss Company. Due to a bit of marketing genius by E.H. Hotchkiss, in Japan and Korea the word for stapler is Hotchikisu, according to Curtis Scaglione's Stapler Exchange. Apparently Hotchkiss sent a shipment of fasteners there and as they were the first fasteners the Japanese had ever seen, they naturally referred to them (and all that followed) by the Hotchkiss name.

Also, there's a question if there is any connections between the Hotchkiss stapler and the Hotchkiss machine gun used in WWI. Jim Breen, an Austrailian IT researcher, did a bit of digging here but couldn't find a definite connection, aside from the fact both families came from Connecticut.

These paper fasteners are the most recent additions to my collection. I first referenced these fasteners in the Stapler of the Week entry for the Chadwick Stapleless Stapler. As stated before, I have been fascinated by the stapleless fastener ever since I stumbled upon their existence. Whether they were created to conserve staples or just to compete with the stapler industry, they did not catch on the way one might think they should. Perhaps the fact that the process was a far less reversible than stapling is behind it not being a common household item. These two hand-held examples were also accompanied by desktop models which resembled staplers of the time.

The process by which the paper is fastened is I think exactly the same. It is more visible on the Clipless model. One can see what appears to be a smaller punch with an eye like a needle and then a larger chisel shaped punch. As you can guess, the larger punch creates the tab and the smaller punch the hole which the tab slips in. When the fastener is fully depressed, the tab is slipped into the eye of the smaller punch. As the fastener is released and the punches withdraw from the paper, the tab is pulled through, fastening the paper together.

I had always associated Arrow with tacker/staple guns. In college, when I was starting to stretch my own canvases, I went straight to Menards and bought an Arrow A-T50. At the time, I was of the opinion that everything had to be heavy duty. Since then, I've come to appreciate the old adage that less is more. The P66 fits in the less category. It lives up to its description as a "small convenient mini plier type stapler with a two tone finish that fits in your pocket." That perhaps isn't the best product catch phrase, but I think it could get stuck in your head if you put it to the right tune.

This stapler was a gift to the Stapler of the Week from John Anderson, friend extraordinare.

This is another stapler on loan from the Jack Pavlik collection. A similar Swingline model was featured in the Stapler of the Week on March 22, 2007. A similar finish can be found on a 1938 Swingline Speed Stapler No 3 featured by the Early Office Museum. I think you can find out a lot by looking at variations in paint and materials. What can I discern from the comparison of these two staplers? The design of the stapler didn't really change but the finish does. This flat black finish can also be found on typewriters and other office items (some of which I own) of the same era. The green version of the Speed Stapler No 4 seems to be a later version. The plastic has changed from black bakelite to a much glossier more refined plastic with the Swingline name inset into the top. In describing the green stapler, I made references to a WWII period drama we had been watching and I can only imagine the change in color perhaps references this event. Perhaps they had a few cans of green paint left over after the dust settled and thought, "Let's use it up on these staplers."

The Hotchkiss No 1 is the first strip stapler I have seen in person. Instead of the fine wire staple strips we load into today's modern stapler, the No 1 used a strip that had been punched and formed from a flat strip of metal. The resulting staple was much more substantial than our modern day staple. The Hotchkiss No 1 was also sold with a tail (as in this example from the early office museum), which I imagine allowed for longer strips of staples to be used. Without having seen one operate, I cannot be sure.

This stapler was on loan to me from the Jack Pavlik collection. We had a great conversation about stapler and he lent me a few examples to document for the Stapler of the Week.

Another beautiful plier stapler, the Markwell RX HANDI-CLIP wins for compactness. It nestles directly in the palm of one's hand and is easily concealable...if one needed to conceal a stapler. As the STAPLEMASTER featured on May 30, 2007 used RF staples, the HANDI-CLIP requires Markwell's brand RX staples. Markwell followed the classic company store strategy, creating a product which you will need to purchase exclusive brand accessories to use. When I first became interested in staplers, my father-in-law gave me my first example of a Neva Clog. That stapler is the J-30 pictured above and came to me along with three or four boxes of Salco replacement DJ-340 staples. It sparked my taste for the stapler plier and the box of Neva Clog staplers in my studio is perhaps evidence of that fact. I've given J-30's as gifts to friends and nephews. They all have had the distinct N-C mark, but only the example given to me by my father-in-law bears the fantastic representation of what the stapler does. The J-60 may not be pretty, but it does have one added feature the J-30 doesn't. With aid of the switch on the bottom, the J-60 has the ability to staple and pin. This may be a feature we take for granted these days, but it wasn't always an option. There is still much more to the Neva-Clog story and as I learn more, you can be sure you'll be the first to hear about it.

This Markwell was the second in a line of stapler gift from my in-laws. I have to say, I have yet to truly understand it. It is a front loading stapler, by way of the unpainted clip cover. Above is a little lever which is under a label reading, "Press up gently and then release quickly before loading." I haven't really found more info on this exact model. What I like about this Staple-Master is the markings. There is a identity tag on it with a shield and the numbers "12-2244." I don't know what that means but it's intriguing. On the plunger top is written in cursive script, "Markwell RF Master," the Markwell name is engraved in the rubber foot, and the name, "Staple-Master" is proudly engraved in all-caps on the very front of the stapler. Markwell still produces and sells office staplers, but most of its business is specialty and industrial staplers and tackers.

Neva Clog is perhaps my favorite of all stapler companies and yet I know very little about it. Located in Bridgeport, CT, Neva Clog produced staplers geared toward very specific tasks. Their "J" line was geared toward the clerical side of the stapling public. But they also produced a whole line of more industrial staplers intended for use in factories, farms, warehouses, upholstery, and leather work. The Model J-56-R is perhaps the most interesting of the "J" line because it features a built-in stapler remover, that folds out not unlike the blade of a jackknife. I'm pretty sure the "R" stands for remover, but I can't be absolutely sure about that. We can look forward to many more Neva Clogs in future Stapler of the Week Posts...I guarantee it!

The first time I saw a Swingline 615, was in 2004 during a premarital counselling session with the white-haired scandinavian Pastor at my grandmother's Lutheran Church. I commented on the stapler and my fiance (now my wife) said she had used them many times (perhaps at the historic house museum or the University mail room she worked in during college.) I was entranced by it. I had made a few booklets in college but had never knew there was a stapler with the expressed purpose of binding these booklets. I had learned about the saddle stitch binding while working at West Publishing. In my two months at Kinko's, I learned to operate copy machines that would copy, fold and staple a booklet. The fact that these operations were happening with the use of machinery did not amaze me, it was the fact that such an odd looking thing would be designed for use by the general public.

In my pursuit of owning a saddle stapler, I found examples of electric foot-pedal activated saddle staplers for high volume booklet making. I almost bought one, but then, when would I ever be saddle stapling enough booklets to need it. The Swingline 615 is in no way vintage. This particular model is fairly modern and is still available for sale. If you search it out on the internet, you'll find it's not a cheap item new ($80 - $100) and that it takes special #35150 round wire staples. I have yet to buy a box and start making some more booklets. As the complete finishing service copier moves out onto the Kinko's self-service floor, I think a my studio and a Lutheran Pastor's office will be the only place to find one.

So, this isn't technically a stapler. But, when I started learning about the world of stapleless staplers, I had to have one. My first pursuit was after a stapleless paper fastener made by the Bump Fastener Company from La Crosse, Wisconsin. There was also the Clipless Paper Fastener Company of Newton, Iowa, who eventually bought out Bump. Above is pictured a Chadwick Stapleless Stapler , which functions on the same principle. A hole and a tab are punched after which the tab is folded into the hole fastening the paper together without a staple.

I really don't know all that much about this stapler. Embossed on the bottom is the text, "SOLD EXCLUSIVELY BY THE STAR PAPER FASTENER CO., INC. NORWALK CONNECTICUT. Made in U.S.A. Patent Dec. 10, 1918 Others Pend. Patent No. 1,787,285 & No. 1,829,537" Sources indicate it was manufactured by the Jones Mfg. Company, which later became the E. H. Hotchkiss Co.. It is identical to the Hotchkiss 1A made in 1929. Such is the blurry line between stapler companies. One company buys out another, retools old designs, scraps the innovations, and the result is a lot of boring homogeneous staplers. But don't get me wrong, I have hope for the future of stapler design.

I love plier staplers. It's sort of hard to describe it but they appeal to my primal right to bear arms instincts. The FC-1 I have at work had been once chained to a receiving desk but I always imagine it holstered at my side, my stapler finger twitching just a bit. Back to the point, the FC-1 has the distinction of being designed and manufactured by ISABERGS VERKSTADS AB, Hestra, Sweden. It and just about every other stapler plier that looks like it are SWEDISH!!! The percentage of Swede in me brims with pride and amazement in the fact that Sweden is even in the stapler market, let alone has nearly cornered the market on shiny chrome plier staplers. I use one at work because it also has the distinction of using a full strip of standard staples, meaning I can dip into the office supply...shhh!

The Tatum T-155 or "Little Buddy" came to me in a lot of staplers. I must admit I was not at first impressed by it. Produced by the Wilson Jones Co. (now owned by ACCO brands), the "Little Buddy" was in production from 1951 to 1965 as indicated through patent research by the Stapler Exchange. This model is, however, excessively unremarkable when compared with the Tatum Aluminum Stapler. I would have to agree that that model is "highly sought after." But as my wife and I tighten our belts, I won't be doing any stapler-seeking on the caliber on the level of the Tatum Aluminum Stapler.

So, it'll be the "Little Buddy" for me.

I have gotten a few replies regarding how the stapler of the week was their family stapler. The Swingline "Tot 50" was my family stapler. I don't recall it being used for anything except perhaps for the family taxes. My family can confirm or deny this but for the most part, the "Tot 50" just took up space. The pictured stapler is not the family stapler, but rather one I received as part of a large lot of staplers. Like other staplers, the "Tot 50", has been redesigned and remarketed. One of my co-workers showed me his little orange stapler and I didn't know what to make of it. It was the new "Tot 50" and I had no idea. There's a variety of colors, the optional built in staple remover or the version with a magnet to stick it to your locker, etc. It fits anywhere but as a result is fairly insubstantial and yet, it still holds a place in my heart.

My wife and I have been watching the BBC series Foyle's War for the past week or so. Set in England during World War II, the program focuses on the fact that murder is still murder, even during war times, and Folye won't let you get away with it. The production notes of the film included some insight into theset dressing of the film. Objects needed to be old and yet look new as they would have in the 1940's.

So, I thought this Speed Stapler would be mildly appropriate for the film. These models were very much influenced by the streamlining of all things of the era. Was it faster than other staplers due to less wind drag? It must have been aerodynamically superior to have earned the title of "Speed Stapler."

Does anyone else think this thing looks like the sphinx?

These early all metal Cubs add the cute-factor to my collection. As with last week's aceliner, the Cub came in many colors. The Cub was redesigned several times in its life and still exists today as a standard half-strip stapler. These examples required 77 or Cub staples that went out of production 15 - 20 years ago and Swingline/Acco has since sold off their surplus stock. So, if one wants to use a Cub, look to ebay, goodwill or the antique shop for staples, as I haven't yet found a source for replacement staples.

The third example of Ace brand staplers from my collection is another addition made by my wife. A careworn, though not distressed example, this aceliner is still commercially available. An "executive" model, it is also comes in black. Vintage items were available in green, red in a similar plastic and also earlier Bakelite faux tortoise shell in a variety of colors. It's a very comfortable stapler to use both in the hand and on the desk top. The cursive name moulded on the handle and the neat detail of the brown plastic in the tab of the spring loading mechanism cheer me right up.

This little hand-held stapler came to me from some friends in the electronic auction ether. This model is still sold today, albiet with less appealing design and color. I'm not altogether to sure I like current stapler design. As more and more parts become plastic and "ergonomically designed," I'm less inclined to look at them. But here, the Swingline 99 fits perfectly in one's palm and is very much made of plastic. I think I can afford to contradict myself occassionally when the stapler is this cool.

A fantastic plier stapler if I've ever seen one, and I've seen a few to date. Perhaps you've seen one on the pharmacy or take out-counter, the plier stapler is a favorite of counter help and shipping clerks across the world. Still available for purchase, the Ace Clipper uses a particular type of staple, as evident on the stamped writing on the handle. I try to stay away from staplers that require me to buy special staples, but there's so much going on when one uses the Ace Clipper. Most staplers only hinge at the tail, whereas the Ace Clipper pivots around 5 separate hinge points. I think that's pretty cool.

Purchased by my wife at the Grandstand State Fair Antique spectacular. This stapler now serves as a doorstop for our bedroom door. These staplers seem to be the most satisfying to use because of the plunger action, reminiscent of a 60's game show buzzer technology. Another comparison one could make is to a telegraph key, but one would waste a lot of staples trying to staple out Morse code.
