Stapler of the Week Archive- Neva Clog J-30 & J-60

Neva Clog J-30 chrome finish

Neva Clog J-60 tarnished chrome finish

When I first became interested in staplers, my father-in-law gave me my first example of a Neva Clog. That stapler is the J-30 pictured above and came to me along with three or four boxes of Salco replacement DJ-340 staples. It sparked my taste for the stapler plier and the box of Neva Clog staplers in my studio is perhaps evidence of that fact. I've given J-30's as gifts to friends and nephews. They all have had the distinct N-C mark, but only the example given to me by my father-in-law bears the fantastic representation of what the stapler does. The J-60 may not be pretty, but it does have one added feature the J-30 doesn't. With aid of the switch on the bottom, the J-60 has the ability to staple and pin. This may be a feature we take for granted these days, but it wasn't always an option. There is still much more to the Neva-Clog story and as I learn more, you can be sure you'll be the first to hear about it.

    1. For real? This one has never been out of its original box. Older than me and looks brand spanking new.

  2. This is a cross posted response to the S-100 blog.

The J-30 and J-60 are certainly not made any more. They are probably at least 30 years old. They take DJ340 staples, which we have in stock. See zebstaples.com

As to value, I’m not sure about that. I’ve seen them sold anywhere from $25 to $50.

    1. Hello there, I just found a J-60 in the original box and it is shiny chrome. Looks brand spanking new. I don't think it ever been out of the box. What should I do with it? It was my Dad's. He passed away last year and I inherited his roll top desk with all these antique staplers. Junk or treasure? I'm not sure, but I would say they are older than me.

  3. Salco seems to have the staples in stock as well. They have Galvanized and Monel. The Monel has no iron (nickel content) and is rust proof/corrosion resistant but cost 4x as much.

This J-30 is one of my prize keepsakes that belonged to my father. This one is definitely pre-1970, could be much older.

  6. Chad I have a J-30 chrome finish but it has two rivets like the J-60, it does not have the J-60 bottom switch. It is marked Pat Pending J-30.
Do you know anything about this model?

  7. I did not know they were so popular. I have been looking for staples for mine for several years. I was given mine by my father who was a pharmacist. I know I used it in his tore in the 1950's so I don't know how old it really is.

  8. I've a J-30 that was my mom-in-law's when she worked in aerospace drafting in the '60s. It describes like Bill's above except that it has a patent # on the bottom of the staple tray; "Others pending".
These really get sold for $25-$50? Where would that be?

  9. I just found your website! I had been thinking that I was the only stapler collector on the planet. My wife thinks my stapler-collecting is a bit odd. I think she's actively seeking a 12-step program to put me through. By the way, I was in a thrift shop this afternoon and bought a N-C J-30 (somewhat tarnished) for $1.99.

    1. That's funny. I just bought. N-C J 30 at my thrift shop for $.50! I just thought it was a cool, substantial stapler. I was frustrated with the cheap models. I only found out how "special" they are :when I searched for staples on line. One "neva" knows!😊

  16. Clint from Tulsa:
I have two of these fine staplers.
They were my fathers he used back in the 50's in his shoe store. I am down to my last row of staples. I am hoping I can find something to fit it. No luck so far and Zebstaples.com website listed above is no longer working.

  17. For Clint- I was just using my dad's trusty J-30 and ran out of staples, so on Amazon I found this for sale, hopefully it will work for you as well...I'm also going to try a regular box of office staples and see if they work.

  18. They have to be from the '60s because I have the one my mother had, and I know she had it around in the '60s. And I still have her original box of 5,000 staples with the $2.50 tag on the back. I love this stapler. It's the only one I ever use. So glad I can still find staples for it. I've tried other hand-held staples and none of them are as good as the NC stapler.

  19. Hello all. I have my fathers J-30 with original box and pamphlet. I remember he would never let us kids play with it. He was a professional photographer. I had no idea there was such a following.
